Rules and tips for riding e-scooters and e-bikes neues Fenster
Cyclists can choose between recommended routes, routes along more natural terrain or quicker routes for more experienced riders. Inclines are marked with arrows and hazardous areas are labelled accordingly. The City Cycle Map also offers information about national routes, bicycle maintenance centres, bicycle parking places, open-air pools and playgrounds.
Parking spaces for bicyles
Parking spaces for bicycles are marked and signalled throughout the city. Residents and property owners appreciate it when bikes are not placed against their facades or chained to gutters or railings.
E-bikes are charged with renewable energy, thus ensuring eco-friendly operation. St.Gallen’s municipal utilities offer the perfect fuel, “St.Gallen Green Energy” and “St.Gallen Green Energy Plus”, for improving the environmental footprint of an electric vehicle.

Sharing platform for e-cargo bikes
Electric cargo bikes are perfectly suited for transporting goods. They protect the environment, save space, promote physical exercise and are fun to use. Whoever wants to profit from these advantages, but does not intend to buy its own cargo bike, can book one, either at carvelo2go.ch or via an app, pay online and later collect the bike at a carvelo2go host.
If you know the brand, type (women’s, men’s, child’s bike), colour and frame number, use our e-police website to report your missing bike, whether it has been stolen or just “borrowed”.
Caution! Other transport users often underestimate speeds “easily” attained by e-bikes. For one, because e-bikes are indistinguishable from conventional ones at a distance. Travelling at a speed appropriate to the traffic situation can help prevent accidents.
Lightweight motor-assisted bike or motorised bike?
E-bikes classified as lightweight motor-assisted bikes have a maximum output of 500 watts and a pedal-assist limit of 25 km/h. As with bicycles, the owners of e-bikes in this category do not need a registration or number plate for their bike. Personal liability insurance should cover your riding activity.
On the other hand, quicker e-bikes (such as motorised bikes) must be equipped with rear-view mirrors and fixed lights, just like mopeds. This concerns e-bikes with an output between 500 and 1,000 watts, and max speeds of above 25 km/h with motor assistance. Bikes in this category require a number plate, and the rider must be in possession of a registration certificate and a driving licence.
Licence obligation
Riders aged between 14 and 16 must always carry a category M licence for mopeds when riding an e-bike. People under the age of 14 are prohibited from riding e-bikes.
Only with a helmet
Helmets are compulsory for e-bike riders in the higher speed category. Furthermore, you will need a certified bicycle helmet or a certified moped helmet, depending on the model.
Although not compulsory for lightweight motor-assisted bikes, we nonetheless recommend that you voluntarily wear a bicycle helmet, even on short trips.
